Couples therapy is different from individual therapy in that the patient in the therapy is the relationship and the individual’s role in the relationship working or not. Generally we bring into our relationships the communication style that we learned as a child. Often the styles of communication that felt like they kept us safe as a child will not work as adults especially in our intimate adult relationships. We all want to be seen, understood and heard. When we do not feel seen, understood and heard in a relationship we end up creating separation between the partners. A key goal of the couple’s therapy is to help the couple to become more in tune with each other and empathetic about each other’s needs and challenges.
